Garage Door FAQ — Chocowinity
Answers to common garage door questions for Chocowinity homeowners.
What exactly does your warranty cover?
Our standard warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for one year on parts and labor. Springs and openers typically carry a separate manufacturer's warranty—usually 5–10 years depending on the brand. We'll walk you through what's covered before installation. Weather damage or wear from lack of maintenance isn't included, but we're happy to discuss what maintenance steps help you stay protected long-term.
Should I choose steel, aluminum, wood, or something else for my door?
Steel is our most popular choice here in Chocowinity—it's durable against humidity and holds up well to our seasonal shifts. Aluminum is lightweight and low-maintenance but less insulating. Wood offers classic charm but requires regular staining and is pricier. Composite materials blend durability with low upkeep. Your home's style, budget, and how much insulation you need should guide the choice. We can show you samples.
How do I get an accurate phone quote without a visit?
Have your door's width and height handy—measure from the outside of the frame. Let us know the material you're interested in, your opener type if you have one, and whether you need springs replaced. A photo of your current door helps too. We'll give you a ballpark range over the phone, but a quick site visit confirms exact pricing since every installation has quirks we want to assess properly.
My door jumped off its track. Is it safe to try to fix myself?
Don't attempt this yourself—an off-track door is heavy and the cables are under serious tension. Trying to realign it can cause injury or damage. We've recovered plenty of doors that slipped during seasonal settling or from a bump. Call us for a same-day or next-day visit. The fix is usually straightforward and affordable, especially if the track isn't bent.
When should I replace weather stripping and seals?
If you notice drafts, see daylight around the edges, or feel cold air in your garage during winter, it's time. Chocowinity's dampness can cause seals to harden and crack faster than in drier climates. Check them every couple of years. Replacing worn seals is inexpensive and improves energy efficiency significantly. We can swap them out in under an hour during most appointments.
Do you work with all garage door opener brands?
We service and install openers from Chamberlain, LiftMaster, Genie, Wayne-Dalton, and most other major brands. If you're replacing an older opener, we'll recommend a model that matches your door's weight and your home's needs. Some newer smart openers integrate well with home automation. Let us know your brand and we'll confirm compatibility before quoting.
What can I do about garage door noise if it's attached to my house?
Noise usually comes from worn rollers, loose hardware, or a torsion spring under stress. We can replace rollers with quieter nylon ones, tighten bolts, and inspect the spring. Adding vibration-dampening brackets to the frame also helps. If your opener is loud, upgrading to a belt-drive model is quieter than chain-drive. A quick inspection tells us exactly where the noise originates.
Should I get a battery backup for my garage door opener?
Battery backups are smart if you live in an area prone to outages or want the peace of mind. They let you open and close your door during power loss—useful if your car is blocked in or you need to access the garage. Installation is straightforward and batteries last several years. Given Chocowinity's occasional storms, many of our customers find them worthwhile. Call for pricing on different backup systems.
How do I know if my springs are failing versus another problem?
A broken spring means your door won't open or feels extremely heavy when you try the opener. You might hear a loud snap. Other issues—like a misaligned sensor or opener malfunction—usually let the door move partway or respond slowly. Springs under tension are dangerous to replace yourself. If your door suddenly feels heavier or won't budge, don't force it; call us for a diagnosis. We'll confirm whether it's the spring or something simpler.
